Almost all of Australia has a general public education system for it’s children. These are funded by relevant government bodies; there are no compulsory fees but voluntary levies and fundraising aid public schools. Public schools can also be broken into open and selective. Open schools cater to all children Australian while selective schools cater to the top 5% of gifted students. Performing arts schools and sports schools may also fall under this category. The majority of selective schools are in New South Wales. Selective schools generally receive better overall marks for performance than independent or open government schools. In Australian Capital Territory, South Australia and Tasmania, students who do not feel they are prepared for tertiary education are given the option of taking a “Year 13” before it commences.
