Gender Equality

There are constant achievement gaps between boys and girls in various subjects.  Boys tend to go for math, science and computer classes, while girls choose English and art classes.  Is this simple genetics or is there more to it?

Gender inequity in computer classrooms

A common misconception is that girls simply don't like computers and that is why they do not tend to stick with computer classes as frequently as boys do.  A lot of this actually has to do with the age children are introduced to computers and the way the programs they use are designed.  Computer games are more geared toward boys than girls, thus girls tend to lose interest faster.

Grade School Through College

It is often stated that girls are more quiet in the classroom.  This could be because males tend to be more aggressive and dominate conversations.  While many women are working to change these patterns and speak up, there are ways teachers can help girls gain confidence in the classroom from a young age.

Social Segregation by Gender

Teachers often single out boys as trouble-makers because girls tend to be more quiet in the classroom.  Because boys are so well-known for getting in trouble, they often dominate the attention of their teachers.  However, this attention could be a major cause in the behavior.

Effects of Single-Sex Environments

Boys and girls pay less attention to their natural roles of competitors vs. shy in  single-sex environments where there is no concern over who they are impressing.
