Here is an example of a learning cycle lesson plan.
Carrying Capacity
The K Factor
This LC was created by Stephanie Ramsey, Vanessa Ricker, and Andy Zimmerman
Engage: The students will be active in a scenario about Carrying Capacity, "Stayin' Alive". THe purpose of this section is to introduce the students to the basic concepts related to carrying capcacity. The students should understand the effects of population growth and decline through moving a population of deer through different natural selection scenarios.
Explore: The students will "Explore" different stations showcasing the main concepts of Carrying Capacity. These stations are set up so that the students interpret information that is given and form opinions based on the information. They will understand birth and death rates and understand their equilibrium, how different organisms have different carrying capacities, how humans impact carrying capacity, etc. This stage will change depending on what concepts you feel are important.
Explain: The students will get into groups and create a concept map based on what they have learned. THey will then create a definition.
Elaborate: The students will work on a Problem-Based Learning Activity. The students will learn that other people have different opinions regarding this concept.
- Part I: The students will read both opposing articles and record these opinions and respond to them.
- Part II: Pass out the Fact Sheet and discuss it with the students. Have them discuss the ???? in small groups, then come together for a class discussion.
- Part III: Have a debate about a population control in China. Students should research and debate different views. Some should be politicians, humanitarians, naturalists, etc. There should also be a jury (the Chinese Gorvernment) to decide who won the debate.
Lesson Plan. Part I.
Evaluate: By this time in the learning cycle, the students will know what a carrying capacity is and why it is important. They will create a video with their groups. They will have to demonstrate their deep understanding for this concept and show it in a creative way.
Lesson Plan. Rubric and handout.
