What is Physical Poverty?

A lack of health or proper physical well-being can have an extremely negative effect on a students performance in the class.  Physical problems can manifest themselves in a number of different negative characteristics and it is the purpose of this page to help teachers account for students’ physical deficiencies in order to achieve maximum achievement from these students.

Studies show that students who participate in physical activity each day exhibit improved memory, concentration, and communication, problem-solving, and leadership abilities, which improve their learning in other subject areas. Such students also display more positive attitudes towards themselves, improved interpersonal behavior, and a willingness to meet and deal with the challenges of daily life. Because active learning is so important for all students, daily vigorous physical activity in elementary schools is strongly encouraged by the provincial curriculum.
