What are the Mental Resources of Poverty?

Before students can focus on school and learning, their most basic needs must be met.  Otherwise, an education will not seem important.  Students living in poverty worry about whether or not they have food before they worry about their homework.  Therefore, in order for students to reach their full potential, teachers must ensure that students' needs are being met in order of importance.  Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs presents and example of the order of importance of different needs in life.
