The Autism Spectrum
What Is Autism?
  • A developmental disability that affects children prior to the age of three. It most significantly affects verbal and nonverbal communication, social interaction and academic performance.
  • Students with autism are usually over stimulated by senses.
  • Autism is a spectrum disorder.
  • People with autism often have delayed language development, prefer to spend time alone, and show less interest in making friends.
  • In the classroom, teachers should maintain environmental predictability through illustrated schedules and explaining upcoming events repetitively weeks in advance of the actual event. This predictability helps reduce anxiety.
The Autism Awareness Ribbon

"The puzzle pattern of this ribbon reflects the mystery and complexity of autism. The different colors and shapes represents the diversity of people and families living with this disorder. The brightness of the ribbon signals hope- hope through research and increasing awareness in people like you." (The Rugged Elegance: Inspiration Network)
