  • What is it? “Disturbance in thinking, mood, or behavior, which is out of keeping with cultural beliefs and norms.” –World Health Organization
  • Types include depression, schizophrenia, dementia, mental retardation
 

Symptoms

Symptoms that may occur if someone is mentally disturbed include various aches, sleep disturbances, and emotional issues such as feeling sad or scared. Other symptoms may involve the person feeling anxious and having a difficulty staying focused. Some may not being able to remember things very well and may have a tendency of being aggressive. The excessive use of substances, including drugs and alcohol, may also occur. A person may see or hear things that other people do not. This condition can happen to anyone of any race, age, or gender.



     

Causes

Causes are not entirely clear, but can be linked to biological, physiological and various social factors.
