What do you need to do in order to teach English overseas?
Steps you can take to teach English overseas:
1.Be Qualified:
a.The main credentials you’ll need for many positions are to be a native speaker of English and to have a college degree. Having a bachelor’s degree in TESL or in any other field is usually the minimum requirement for teaching jobs in most countries and a master’s in TESL or a related field is needed for some jobs, particularly in higher education.
i.You can get a TESL certificate through different programs many are offered at local colleges. Some TESL certificates are awarded online. Once you find a class you want to take, talk to employers at the country you would like to teach in. Make sure the country you're interested in accepts TESL certificates from that school before signing up.
2.Find a Job:
a.One way to find an overseas teaching position is to apply through a U.S.-based organization. These usually arrange placement and provide for logistical matters, such as housing and a work permit. They also offer programs for certification in TESL as well.
b.The second strategy is to write directly to overseas schools. Chances of success are limited without going to that country for an interview.
c.The third strategy is to go to the country where you want to work and apply in person. The major downside to this is cost: airfare, housing (possibly paying several months’ rent up front), and the need to travel to a third country to get a work permit once you land a job.
3.Choose A Placement Program:
a.When choosing a program, inquire about: fees, salary, job placement, work permit, health insurance, housing, teacher training and materials, whether there is an orientation, and level of on-site support.
